Inspired by the sculpural beauty of woodblocks after printing, this class is for new and experienced printmakers and woodworkers interested in bringing their creations away from the walls and off of the shelves. Students will each make their own mobile using printmaking blocks as sculptural objects. The whole structure will measure approximately 2'x2' and 3'-4' tall (depending on ceiling suspension), including a wooden support (X-form or paralel bars) and carved woodblock pieces suspended with string. Emphasis will be on using woodblock carving tools to create designs in blocks, and on the balancing of all of the components. The blocks will be pre-cut into smooth, mostly circular shapes, but students will have the opportunity to cut a shape on the bandsaw to become familiar with the process, and will use drills and hammers to attach string to the components. The carved blocks will then be inked for contrast and/or color using printing inks applied with brayers and/or waxes and oils. New and experienced printmakers will become better aquainted wtith block carving tools and techniques that can be utilized in printmaking and other carving applications, become familiar with inks and oil staining, engage with wood using multiple tools and techniques, and have an introduction to the bandsaw.

This class is for women and non-binary folks. All materials and tools will be supplied. A materials fee of $15 should be paid directly to the instructor at the beginning of class (cash or app-based payments accepted).
